🤔 Why waiting for team stability before deploying training and development may not be the best approach.

17th February, 2023

In a time when you're nearly always recruiting and longing for the day when your team is complete and stable (imagine!), deferring training and development could create problems around the corner.

With the addition of new and much-needed team members comes the need to onboard and dedicate time and energy to their induction and learning. Meanwhile, the backbone of your team - the current team members may be disengaging.

Training and development should be an ongoing process that takes place throughout the life of a team member and the team. This approach ensures that team members are continually developing their skills and improving their performance, and it also helps to keep them engaged and motivated 🙌🏼

Here are some reasons why waiting for team stability may not be the best approach:

  1. Disengagement: Current team members may become disengaged if they feel that their development is not a priority. They may feel neglected, unappreciated, or undervalued, leading to decreased motivation and productivity.
  2. Missed opportunities: Waiting for team stability may mean missing out on valuable opportunities to train and develop team members. These opportunities may arise unexpectedly, and if the team is not prepared, they may be missed.
  3. Slow team progress: Delaying training and development can slow the team's progress. If team members are not continuously developing their skills, they may not be equipped to handle new challenges or changes that arise.
  4. Word of mouth: You've promised a world of engagement and opportunity to your new recruit, only for this to be clouded by a team member who believes this doesn't reflect their experience.
  5. Increased turnover: When team members feel that their development is not a priority, they may look for opportunities elsewhere. This can lead to increased turnover, which can be costly in terms of lost time and opportunities (impact on the wider team and clients), not to mention the recruitment cost.

In short, don't wait for the perfect moment to develop your existing team members. Jump on the opportunity to get your people performing. Chances are they'll spread that knowledge with your new starters. Training and development should be an ongoing process that takes place throughout the life of the team. By continually developing the skills and abilities of team members, you can keep your team engaged, motivated, and productive and ultimately drive better results.
